The word itself comes from the Latin persona (a theatre mask), but the modern concept refers to something much more permanent than a temporary mask: 'the relatively stable and unique characteristics of an individual across different situations and varied period of time.' Several psychologists have offered their own precise wording for this same idea - Robert A Baron called it 'an individual's unique and relatively stable pattern of behaviour, thoughts and feelings'; Allport (1961) described it as the dynamic organisation within the individual of the psychological systems that determine their unique adjustment to their environment; Eysenck (1953) framed it as the stable organisation of a person's character, temperament, intellect and physique. …
