Difference 1 — Nature of forces: Physisorption arises from weak van der Waals (physical) forces between the adsorbate and adsorbent surface, with no new chemical bond formed. Chemisorption occurs due to the formation of strong chemical bonds (covalent-type) between the adsorbate molecules and the surface atoms.
Difference 2 — Enthalpy and reversibility: Physisorption has a low enthalpy of adsorption (about 20-40 kJ/mol), forms a multilayer of adsorbate, and is generally reversible. Chemisorption has a much higher enthalpy of adsorption (80-240 kJ/mol), is restricted to a monolayer, and is generally irreversible.
