Elevation of boiling point and depression of freezing point are both measured while the temperature of the solution is being changed, so a temperature-independent unit is essential.

Molarity, , depends on the volume of the solution. Volume expands on heating and contracts on cooling (thermal expansion of the liquid), so for a fixed amount of solute the molarity of the very same solution would appear different at the boiling point than it was at room temperature.
