Yoga Nidra's procedure: lie still in Shavasana, systematically move attention through every part of the body, then return slowly and gently to normal awareness.

Step by step, per the textbook:

  1. Lie down straight on your back in Shavasana (Corpse Pose). Close your eyes and relax, taking a few slow, deep breaths.
  2. Gently take your attention to the right foot, holding it there a few seconds while relaxing it; move attention up to the right knee, thigh and hip, becoming aware of the whole right leg.
  3. Repeat the same process for the left leg.
  4. Take your attention to the stomach, navel region and chest.
  5. Take your attention to the right shoulder, arm, palm and fingers; then repeat on the left shoulder, arm, throat, face, and finally the top of the head.
  6. Take a deep breath in, observe the sensations in your body, and relax in this state for a few minutes.
  7. Slowly becoming aware of your body and surroundings, turn onto your right side and keep lying down for a few more minutes (rolling to the right lets the breath flow through the left nostril, which helps cool the body). …
