These are drawing exercises; described in words, they show a liverwort's rhizoid-anchored thallus, a Funaria gametophyte with its attached sporophyte, and the angiosperm cycle of a dominant sporophyte with reduced, enclosed gametophytes.

As actual diagrams cannot be produced here, each is described as a textual guide to what should be drawn and labelled.

a. Female and male thallus of a liverwort: Both thalli are flat, dorsiventral structures (having a distinct upper and lower surface) that lie closely pressed against the ground. The lower surface should be labelled with rhizoids, the structures that anchor the thallus and may be single- or multi-celled. The upper surface of the thallus carries the sex organs: the male thallus bears antheridia, producing motile, biflagellate antherozoids, while the female thallus bears archegonia, each a flask-shaped organ holding a single egg.

b. Gametophyte and sporophyte of Funaria: The gametophyte should be drawn as an upright, leafy shoot, its leaves arranged spirally around the axis, anchored to the soil by branched, multicellular rhizoids at its base; antheridia and archegonia should be labelled at the tip of this leafy shoot. Attached to the gametophyte, the sporophyte is drawn growing out from the fertilised archegonium, made of three labelled parts -- a foot embedded in the gametophyte tissue (through which it draws nourishment), a seta or stalk, and a capsule at the tip, within which meiosis produces spores. …
