The escape speed formula ve=2GM/rv_e=\sqrt{2GM/r} depends only on rr, the distance from Earth's centre at the launch point. It does not depend on the mass of the projected body, the direction it's launched in, or where on the surface it's launched from (at the same height) — it depends only on the height of the launch point.

Deriving the escape speed

A body just escapes Earth's gravity if it reaches infinity with zero leftover kinetic energy. By conservation of energy, launched with speed vev_e from distance rr from Earth's centre (mass MM, body mass mm):

12mve2−GMmr=0\frac12mv_e^2 - \frac{GMm}{r} = 0

ve=2GMrv_e = \sqrt{\frac{2GM}{r}}

(a) Mass of the body

The mass mm of the projected body cancels out of the equation above completely — it appears on both the kinetic-energy and potential-energy terms and divides out. So escape speed does not depend on the mass of the body: a pebble and a rocket need the same escape speed from the same point.

(b) Location on the surface

The formula depends only on rr, the straight-line distance from Earth's centre. Two launch points at the same height above the surface — regardless of latitude or longitude — sit at the same rr (treating Earth as spherical), so they give the same escape speed. Escape speed does not depend on which point on the surface (at a given height) the body is launched from.

(c) Direction of projection …
