Platelets are one of the two triggers that switch on blood coagulation, and when their numbers fall too low, clotting fails and excessive bleeding results — direct proof of how essential they are.

An injury or trauma sets the clotting machinery in motion in two ways: platelets in the blood, on being stimulated at the site of damage, release certain factors that switch on the coagulation mechanism, while the injured tissues at the wound site can also release factors that begin the process independently.
