Poikilothermy, camouflage, and aestivation/hibernation are all survival adaptations that help the frog cope with a changing environment, avoid predators, and endure temperature extremes without expending excessive energy.

Each of these traits addresses a different survival challenge the frog faces in its natural environment. As a poikilotherm (cold-blooded animal), the frog's internal body temperature simply rises and falls with the temperature of its surroundings, rather than being actively regulated by the body itself; this spares the frog the substantial energy cost that warm-blooded animals pay to keep their body temperature constant, which is a real energetic advantage as long as extreme temperatures are avoided.

Camouflage complements this by helping the frog avoid being noticed by predators in the first place: by changing or matching its body colour to its resting background, such as grass or dry ground, the frog becomes far harder to spot, improving its odds of escaping detection and predation altogether. …
