Transport means the physical movement of goods and passengers from one place to another; it removes the hindrance of place in trade. Its key benefits are creating place utility, widening markets, stabilising prices, encouraging large-scale production, mobility of labour and capital, availability of goods everywhere, and employment generation.

Meaning of Transport

Transport is an auxiliary (aid) to trade that carries goods and people from the place of production to the place of consumption. Goods are usually produced in one region but demanded across many regions; transport bridges this place gap and thereby creates place utility. The main modes are land (road and rail), water (inland and ocean) and air, each suited to different distances, costs and types of goods. This topic aligns closely with the NCERT/CBSE commerce treatment of transport as an auxiliary to trade.

Benefits of Transport

  1. Creation of place utility – By carrying goods from surplus areas to deficit areas, transport makes goods useful where they are actually wanted, adding to their value.
  2. Widening of the market – Producers are no longer limited to local buyers; goods can be sold in national and international markets, converting local markets into wider ones.
  3. Stability of prices – By moving goods quickly from areas of surplus to areas of scarcity, transport balances supply with demand and prevents wide price fluctuations between regions.
  4. Encourages large-scale production – Assured movement of raw materials in and finished goods out makes mass/large-scale production feasible, which lowers cost per unit.
  5. Availability of goods everywhere – Seasonal and perishable goods (fruits, vegetables, fish) and specialised goods reach distant consumers, raising the standard of living. …
