The Bill of Entry is the key document an importer, or the importer's clearing agent, files with the customs authorities when goods arrive in the country. It gives full particulars of the imported consignment — description, quantity, value, country of origin and the applicable tariff classification — so customs can assess the duty payable and permit clearance of the goods.

Traditionally, three colour-coded versions of the Bill of Entry were used depending on how the goods would be dealt with: a white Bill of Entry for goods intended for immediate home consumption; a yellow Bill of Entry (also called the 'into bond' bill) for goods that are to be stored in a bonded warehouse without immediate duty payment; and a green Bill of Entry (the 'ex-bond' bill) used when goods already warehoused are later cleared for home consumption.
