The National Manufacturing Policy was introduced by the Government of India in 2011 to give a strong push to the manufacturing sector, whose share in national income and employment had remained low. Its main objectives are:
- Raising the share of manufacturing in GDP to about 25 per cent within a decade, so that industry contributes more to national income.
- Large-scale employment generation — creating about 100 million additional jobs to absorb the growing workforce and shift people from agriculture to industry.
- Enhancing global competitiveness of Indian manufacturing through better technology, quality and productivity.
- Developing National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZs) — large, well-planned industrial areas with world-class infrastructure, simplified rules and single-window clearances.
