Step 1 – The naming rule. A colloidal sol (dispersed phase = solid, medium = liquid or gas) is commonly named by its dispersion medium: "…sol" is prefixed by the medium.

Step 2 – The three terms.

  • (i) Alcosol: the dispersion medium is alcohol (ethanol). Example: colloidal cellulose nitrate or a colloidal drug dispersed in alcohol.
