Q.Define a motor unit.
A single motor neuron's axon branches near its end, and each branch forms a neuromuscular junction with one muscle fibre. A motor unit is defined as this single motor neuron together with all the muscle fibres it supplies. Because one nerve impulse travels down the neuron and reaches every one of its branches almost simultaneously, all the fibres of that motor unit contract together, in an all-or-none fashion. Motor units vary in size: small motor units (few fibres per neuron), as in the eye muscles, allow fine, precise control; large motor units (many fibres per neuron), as in the big limb muscles, sacrifice precision for raw force.
A single motor neuron with all the muscle fibres it innervates.
