Q.M/s Mehra and Sons acquired a machine for ₹1,80,000 on October 01, 2016, and spent ₹20,000 for its installation. The firm writes-off depreciation at the rate of 10% on original cost every year. Record necessary journal entries for the year 2017 and draw up Machine Account and Depreciation Account for first three years given that:

(i) The book of accounts closes on March 31 every year; and
(ii) The firm charges depreciation to asset account.

Original cost ₹2,00,000; 10% on original cost = ₹20,000 p.a. First year gets 6 months (₹10,000) because the machine was bought on Oct 01. Machine Account: ₹1,90,000 → ₹1,70,000 → ₹1,50,000.

Concept

When the fixed-instalment (straight line) rate is applied on original cost, the annual charge is a fixed percentage of the original cost. In the year of purchase, depreciation is charged only for the part of the year the asset was actually held — here 6 months (Oct 01 to Mar 31).

Working

  • Original cost = ₹1,80,000 + ₹20,000 = ₹2,00,000
  • Full-year depreciation = 10% × ₹2,00,000 = ₹20,000
  • 2016-17 (6 months) = ₹20,000 × 6/12 = ₹10,000
