An activity: keep a two-week diary of your family's purchases (item, quantity, price, expenditure), then judge the effect of price changes by whether the same basket now costs more or less.

How to do it (a model approach)

Maintain a daily record for two weeks in a simple table:

DateItemQuantity boughtPrice per unit (Rs)Expenditure (Rs)
…Rice2 kg4080
…Milk1 litre5555
……………

Analysing the effect of price change:

  • Add up expenditure for week 1 and week 2 on the same set of items.
  • If prices rose, the same basket costs more, so either the family spent more or had to buy less — its real income / purchasing power fell.
  • If prices fell, the same basket costs less — purchasing power rose. …
