A workable topic balances genuine interest against practicality — data that can actually be collected within the time and resources a student realistically has.

What makes a topic workable

  • Genuine interest — a topic the student actually wants to explore keeps the project from becoming a chore, and the analysis tends to be more thoughtful.
  • Right scope — not so broad that meaningful data collection becomes impossible (e.g. "India's economy"), and not so narrow that there's nothing left to analyse.
  • Feasibility of data collection — the target group must be genuinely reachable; a topic requiring data from a group the student has no access to is a poor choice regardless of how interesting it is.
  • Time and resources available — the topic should fit within the time a school project realistically allows.
  • Relevance to the subject — the topic should connect to the statistical tools (averages, correlation, index numbers, etc.) the student has actually studied, so those tools can genuinely be applied.
