Watch for threatening/humiliating messages, rumours, morphed images and fake profiles targeting the friend (plus their distress after going online); the IT Act 2000 (amended 2008) punishes such acts mainly via Sections 66C, 66D, 66E and 67.

The concept (cyberbullying identification). Cyber bullying is repeated digital behaviour meant to harass, threaten, embarrass or demean a person. Because it happens on platforms peers share, an alert friend can spot it both online (the content itself) and offline (the victim's behaviour).

a) Online activities that reveal a friend is being cyber bullied

  • Threatening, insulting or intimidating messages/comments repeatedly aimed at them in chats or on their posts.
  • Embarrassing, edited/morphed photos or videos of them being posted or circulated.
  • Rumours or hate pages/polls about them spreading through social media or group chats.
  • Fake profiles created in their name posting objectionable content, or their account showing activity they deny doing (suggesting it is compromised).
  • Being deliberately removed/excluded from groups and then discussed mockingly.
  • Behavioural give-aways: visibly upset or anxious after using the phone, suddenly deactivating accounts, hiding the screen, avoiding school or friends.

b) Provisions in the IT Act 2000 (amended in 2008)

The Act has no section literally titled "cyber bullying", but the acts that constitute it are punishable:

  • Section 66C — Identity theft: fraudulent use of another's password/e-signature/unique ID (covers hijacked accounts and fake profiles). Up to 3 years imprisonment and fine.
  • Section 66D — Cheating by personation using a computer resource: impersonating someone online.
  • Section 66E — Violation of privacy: capturing or circulating images of a person's private area/private moments without consent.
  • Section 67 (and 67A) — Publishing/transmitting obscene or sexually explicit material electronically — covers humiliating obscene content used to bully. …
