Figure 1.1's block diagram has four components — Input Device, CPU (Control Unit + ALU), Primary Memory, Secondary Storage, and Output Device — connected by directed lines showing the flow of data.

Diagram (Figure 1.1): a vertical stack of Secondary Storage Devices ↔ Primary Memory ↔ CPU, where the CPU box contains the Control Unit (CU) above the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), joined by a double-headed arrow. An Input Device oval sits to the left with a single arrow pointing INTO the CPU; an Output Device oval sits to the right with a single arrow pointing OUT of the CPU.

Functionality of each component:

  • Input Device (keyboard, mouse, scanner, etc.) — accepts data and instructions from the user and sends them to the CPU.
  • CPU — the Control Unit (CU) directs and coordinates the operations of all other units; the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) performs arithmetic and logical operations on the data.
  • Primary Memory — temporarily holds the data and instructions currently being used by the CPU. …
