Heart + vessels + blood form the circulatory system; the four-chambered heart drives two loops — pulmonary (heart↔lungs) and systemic (heart↔body) — the double circulation.

Structure of the circulatory system

  • Heart — a muscular pump with four chambers: two upper atria (right and left) that receive blood, and two lower ventricles (right and left) that pump it out. Valves between and out of the chambers keep blood flowing one way.
  • Blood vessels — arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry it back, and capillaries are the thin vessels where exchange with tissues occurs.
  • Blood — the fluid that transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and wastes.

Double circulation — in humans blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit, forming two separate loops:

  1. Pulmonary circulation (heart ↔ lungs): the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, where it releases carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen; oxygenated blood returns via the pulmonary veins to the left atrium.

  2. Systemic circulation (heart ↔ body): the left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood through the aorta to the whole body; after delivering oxygen at the tissues, the now deoxygenated blood returns via the veins to the right atrium. …
