Trataka = unblinking gazing at a fixed point (candle/dot); it strengthens the eyes and builds concentration.

How it is practised:

  • Sit comfortably with the spine erect in a quiet, draught-free place; place a candle flame or a small black dot at eye level, about an arm's length away.
  • Gaze steadily at the object without blinking for as long as it is comfortable, keeping the eyes relaxed; tears may flow — this is normal.
  • When the eyes tire, close them gently and visualise the after-image of the object at the eyebrow centre until it fades.
  • Repeat a few rounds; end by palming the eyes with the warm palms.
