Birds fly because their forelimbs are wings, their bodies are feathered, their bones are hollow and light, and air sacs boost their breathing — a whole body plan built for flight.

Almost every feature of a bird can be read as an adaptation for flight, because flight shapes the entire class. The starting point is the pair of wings: the forelimbs are modified into wings, and these are the structures that lift the bird and drive it through the air. The body is covered with feathers, and flight is the general rule for the group, the flightless birds such as the ostrich being the exceptions.

Weight is the great enemy of flight, and the skeleton is arranged to keep it low without giving up strength:

  • The skeleton is fully ossified, so it is firm and bony.
  • The long bones are hollow and filled with air cavities — these pneumatic bones cut the animal's weight while keeping the frame rigid.

Flight also makes heavy demands on breathing and on energy supply, and here too the bird is well equipped:
