Proteins are the most versatile biomolecules — some, such as insulin, antibodies and enzymes, are used as medicines, while others, such as collagen, have further uses like cosmetics.

Proteins carry out an enormous range of jobs in living organisms. Some transport nutrients across the cell membrane, some fight infectious organisms, some act as hormones, and some act as enzymes. This very versatility is why proteins are so useful both in medicine and in other industries.

Proteins used as therapeutic agents:

  • Insulin — a protein that acts as a hormone. It is one of the best-known protein medicines, used to manage diabetes.
  • Antibodies — proteins whose natural role is to fight infectious agents. This same property makes them valuable in treatment and in diagnosis.
  • Enzymes such as trypsin — proteins that act as biological catalysts and can be put to medical use in breaking down or processing substances.

Other applications of proteins:
