Anything belonging to the gametophyte or a gamete is haploid, anything belonging to the sporophyte is diploid, and the primary endosperm nucleus is triploid.

The quickest way to fix ploidy is to trace each cell back to its phase in the life cycle. The gametophyte and the gametes it forms carry a single set of chromosomes and are haploid; the sporophyte, which grows from a fertilised egg, carries a double set and is diploid.

  • Protonemal cell of a moss — haploid. The protonema grows directly from a germinating spore and is an early stage of the gametophyte, so it carries one set of chromosomes.
  • Primary endosperm nucleus in a dicot — triploid. It is formed by the fusion of a male gamete with two polar nuclei, so three haploid sets combine, making it triploid.
  • Leaf cell of a moss — haploid. In a moss the dominant plant, including its leafy shoots, is the gametophyte, so its leaf cells are haploid.
  • Prothallus cell of a fern — haploid. The prothallus is the fern's gametophyte, grown from a spore, and is therefore haploid.
  • Gemma cell in Marchantia — haploid. A gemma is a multicellular asexual bud produced on the gametophyte, so its cells share the gametophyte's haploid condition.
  • Meristem cell of a monocot — diploid. A flowering plant's body is the sporophyte, so its meristematic cells are diploid. …
