Balance payable by shares = ₹3,60,000. At par this needs 3,600 shares; at a 20% premium (₹120) it needs 3,000 shares with ₹60,000 going to Securities Premium Reserve.

Concept

When a company pays for an asset partly in cash and partly by issuing shares, the vendor is recorded as a creditor first, then settled. The number of shares issued equals the amount payable by shares divided by the issue price (not the face value). Share Capital is credited at face value; any excess is credited to Securities Premium Reserve.

Working Notes

Amount payable by shares = ₹3,80,000 − ₹20,000 (cash) = ₹3,60,000.

  • (a) At par: issue price ₹100, so number of shares = ₹3,60,000 ÷ ₹100 = 3,600 shares.
  • (b) At 20% premium: issue price = ₹100 + ₹20 = ₹120, so number of shares = ₹3,60,000 ÷ ₹120 = 3,000 shares. Share Capital = 3,000 × ₹100 = ₹3,00,000; Securities Premium = 3,000 × ₹20 = ₹60,000.
