₹800 lakh (₹8,00,00,000) of 10% debentures are issued at par and redeemed at par on 31 Mar 2017. Before redemption the company creates a Debenture Redemption Reserve of ₹80,00,000 (10% of face value) and invests ₹1,20,00,000 (15%) in Debenture Redemption Investments; on redemption the investment is encashed, holders are paid ₹8,00,00,000, and the DRR is transferred to General Reserve.

Concept

Before debentures are redeemed, a company must (a) transfer at least 10% of the face value of the outstanding debentures to a Debenture Redemption Reserve (DRR) out of profits available for dividend, and (b) on or before 30 April of the year of redemption, invest 15% of the face value of the debentures maturing during the year in specified Debenture Redemption Investments (DRI). On redemption the investment is realised, the debentures are paid off, and the DRR is transferred to General Reserve.

Working Note

  • Face value = ₹800 lakh = ₹8,00,00,000 (8,00,000 debentures of ₹100 each)
  • DRR = 10% of ₹8,00,00,000 = ₹80,00,000
  • DRI = 15% of ₹8,00,00,000 = ₹1,20,00,000
  • Redemption is at par → amount payable to holders = ₹8,00,00,000
