Q.In a district, exam scores of 300 student of class XII are recorded at the end of the session.

a) Ramesh scored 800 marks in total out of 1000. The average score for the batch was 700 and the standard deviation was calculated to be 180. Find out how has Ramesh scored compared to his batch mates in the whole district.
b) Sudha scored 420 marks in the same batch. What can you say about her performance as compared to the batch of 300 students?
c) How much has Abhay scored if he has done better than 44.83% of his batchmates?

Convert each mark to Z=x−700180Z=\dfrac{x-700}{180} and read the normal area: Ramesh ≈71\approx71st percentile, Sudha ≈6\approx6th percentile, and a 44.83%44.83\% percentile corresponds to a score of about 677677.

Z=x−μσZ=\dfrac{x-\mu}{\sigma} with μ=700\mu=700, σ=180\sigma=180; the fraction of batchmates scoring below is Φ(Z)\Phi(Z) (standard-normal cumulative area). Reverse: x=μ+Zσx=\mu+Z\sigma.

  1. (a) Ramesh, x=800x=800. Z=800−700180=100180=0.56Z=\dfrac{800-700}{180}=\dfrac{100}{180}=0.56. From the normal table Φ(0.56)≈0.711\Phi(0.56)\approx0.711. So Ramesh scored better than about 71%71\% of the 300300 students (≈213\approx213 of them) — clearly above average.
  2. (b) Sudha, x=420x=420. Z=420−700180=−280180=−1.56Z=\dfrac{420-700}{180}=\dfrac{-280}{180}=-1.56. Φ(−1.56)=1−Φ(1.56)=1−0.9406=0.0594≈0.06\Phi(-1.56)=1-\Phi(1.56)=1-0.9406=0.0594\approx0.06. Sudha beat only about 6%6\% of the batch — a poor, well-below-average performance.
  3. (c) Abhay did better than 44.83%44.83\%, i.e. his percentile area is 0.44830.4483. Find ZZ with Φ(Z)=0.4483\Phi(Z)=0.4483; since it is below 0.50.5, Z<0Z<0. As Φ(0.13)=0.5517\Phi(0.13)=0.5517, we have Φ(−0.13)=0.4483\Phi(-0.13)=0.4483, so Z=−0.13Z=-0.13. Then x=μ+Zσ=700+(−0.13)(180)=700−23.4=676.6.x=\mu+Z\sigma=700+(-0.13)(180)=700-23.4=676.6.
✓Final answer

  1. Z=0.56Z=0.56, ≈71\approx71st percentile;
  2. Z=−1.56Z=-1.56, ≈6\approx6th percentile;
  3. score ≈676.6≈677\approx676.6\approx677 marks.
