A lever is a rigid bar turning about a fulcrum to move a load via an applied effort; the three classes differ only in which of these three parts sits in the middle of the bar.

A lever is 'a rigid bar used to overcome resistance when a force is applied' — in the human body, bones act as the levers, muscles supply the effort, and the joints act as the fulcrum. Every lever system has four parts: the Load (what is being moved), the Fulcrum (the pivot point), the Effort (the applied muscular force), and the Lever (the rigid bar/bone) itself.

Diagrams (describe/sketch as a simple horizontal bar):

  • First-Class Lever: Load — Fulcrum — Effort (fulcrum in the centre), e.g., the triceps extending the elbow in a throw.
  • Second-Class Lever: Fulcrum — Load — Effort (load in the centre), e.g., a straight push-up.
  • Third-Class Lever: Fulcrum — Effort — Load (effort in the centre), e.g., the biceps flexing the elbow in a sit-up. …
