(a) Yes — India has more varied habitats/ecosystems (deserts, rainforests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands) than Norway. (b) Genetic diversity is variation within a species; species diversity is variation between species. OR: Urban sewage raises BOD, depletes dissolved oxygen and causes eutrophication, harming aquatic life.

Concept. Biodiversity is the variety and variability of life, described by Edward Wilson at three levels: genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.

(a) India's ecosystem diversity vs Norway. Yes, I agree. Ecosystem diversity refers to the diversity at the level of ecological complexes/habitats in a region. India, with its varied geography and climate, has an enormous range of ecosystems — deserts, tropical rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries, coastal areas, grasslands and alpine meadows. A temperate country like Norway has far fewer types of ecosystems. Hence India shows greater ecosystem diversity than Norway.

(b) Genetic vs species biodiversity.

  • Genetic diversity: the diversity shown by a single species at the genetic level — i.e. variation of genes within the same species across its range (e.g. the medicinal plant Rauwolfia vulcanoides growing in different Himalayan ranges shows genetic variation in the active chemical it produces; the thousands of rice or mango varieties).
  • Species diversity: the diversity at the level of species — the variety of different species present in a region (e.g. the Western Ghats have a greater amphibian species diversity than the Eastern Ghats).

OR — effect of discharging urban sewage into a river. Urban sewage is rich in biodegradable organic matter and nutrients.

  1. Microorganisms decompose this organic matter, consuming large amounts of oxygen — this sharply increases the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of the river water. …
