Q.An embryo sac is described in which a pollen tube has grown in through the micropylar region and burst, releasing two small male gametes near the top of the sac. Within the sac, at the micropylar end, lies an egg cell together with an accessory cell beside it; the large central region of the sac contains two nuclei lying close to each other; and a tube can be seen having grown into the sac from below. Name each of the following: the two small released male gametes; the egg cell; the two nuclei lying together in the central region; the accessory cell beside the egg; and the tube that has grown into the sac.

The labelled parts are the two male gametes, the egg cell, a synergid beside it, the two polar nuclei of the central cell, and the pollen tube itself.
Concept
At fertilisation the pollen tube enters the embryo sac through a synergid and releases two male gametes into it – the event that precedes double fertilisation. A mature embryo sac is 7-celled and 8-nucleate: an egg apparatus (egg + two synergids) at the micropylar end, a central cell with two polar nuclei, and three antipodal cells at the chalazal end.
Named parts
- Male gametes – the two small cells just released from the tip of the pollen tube; one will fuse with the egg (syngamy) and the other with the polar nuclei (triple fusion).
- Egg cell – the female gamete lying at the micropylar end; it fuses with one male gamete to form the zygote.
- Synergid – the accessory cell beside the egg cell; its filiform apparatus guides the pollen tube into the sac. …
