Uses
Dichloromethane, , better known by its common name methylene chloride, is valued mainly as a solvent:
- As a paint remover
- As a propellant in aerosol cans
- As a process solvent in drug manufacture
- As a metal cleaning and finishing solvent
Health effects
Methylene chloride is harmful to the human central nervous system, and the severity of the effect depends on the level of exposure.
- Lower levels of methylene chloride vapour in air can mildly impair hearing and vision.
- Higher levels bring on dizziness, nausea, and a tingling/numb sensation in the fingers and toes.
- Direct skin contact causes intense burning and mild reddening of the skin. …
