The condition is Osteoarthritis — a degenerative joint disease common in old age, caused by progressive wear-and-tear of the cartilage that cushions the joints.

Every joint has a smooth layer of cartilage covering the ends of the bones, acting as a cushion that lets the bones move against each other smoothly and painlessly. With advancing age and years of use, this cartilage gradually thins, cracks, and wears away in patches. As the cartilage is lost, the bone ends underneath begin to rub directly against one another.
