Q.What is a production function?
Production is the process of combining resources (land, labour, capital, organisation) to create goods and services. The production function is the technical statement of this process: it specifies, for every combination of inputs, the maximum quantity of output that can be obtained from them, assuming the firm uses the most efficient known technique and technology stays unchanged. Symbolically it is written as , where is output, is the quantity of labour employed and is the quantity of capital employed (other inputs can be added to the function as needed). The production function takes two forms depending on the time period: a short-run form, in which at least one factor is fixed and output responds to the Law of Variable Proportions, and a long-run form, in which all factors are variable and output responds to Returns to Scale.
Production function: — the maximum output obtainable from given input quantities at the existing level of technology; short-run form has a fixed factor, long-run form has none.
