In economics a market is any arrangement by which buyers and sellers of a good are in contact to carry out exchange. Markets are classified mainly on the basis of (a) geographical area, (b) time, and (c) nature of competition.

Meaning of market

In economics the word market refers not to a physical place but to the relationship between buyers and sellers of a commodity who are in such close contact that the price of the good tends to be the same throughout. Thus the essentials of a market are: a commodity, buyers and sellers, a place or means of contact, and one price for one commodity.

Classification of markets

A. On the basis of area:

  • Local market: The commodity is bought and sold within a small local area, usually perishable or bulky goods like vegetables and bricks.
  • Regional market: Demand and supply spread over a region, for example regional handlooms.
  • National market: The commodity has buyers and sellers throughout the country, such as wheat or cement.
  • International (world) market: The good is traded across the world, for example gold, crude oil and coffee.

B. On the basis of time (Marshall's classification):

  • Very short period (market period): Supply is fixed; price is determined mainly by demand.
  • Short period: Supply can be changed only by varying the variable factors.
  • Long period: Supply can be fully adjusted as all factors are variable.
  • Very long period (secular period): Even technology, population and tastes change.

C. On the basis of competition:

  • Perfect competition: Very large number of buyers and sellers, homogeneous product, free entry and exit, perfect knowledge and one ruling price.
