The fern prothallus is a small, free-living, photosynthetic gametophyte, dependent on moist conditions, that produces the sex organs and gives rise to the dominant sporophyte after fertilisation.

In ferns, as in other pteridophytes, the conspicuous, long-lived plant with true roots, stem and leaves is the sporophyte. Its sporangia produce spores by meiosis, and it is from one of these spores, on germination, that the prothallus arises. The prothallus is the gametophyte generation, and it is markedly different in scale and complexity from the sporophyte: it is small, inconspicuous, multicellular, mostly photosynthetic and thalloid, meaning it is a simple flattened structure rather than one differentiated into distinct organs.

Because the prothallus is thin and unprotected, it can only survive in cool, damp, shady places, and this narrow requirement, combined with the further need for water during fertilisation, is a major reason living pteridophytes are confined to limited kinds of habitats. …
