Mycorrhiza is a fungal root association seen in Pinus, and coralloid roots are cyanobacteria-hosting root structures seen in Cycas.

Gymnosperms generally have a tap root system, but two genera show special root adaptations that involve partnerships with other organisms. In Pinus, the roots enter into an association with fungi, and this partnership is called mycorrhiza. The fungus growing in and around the root helps the plant take up nutrients from the soil more effectively than the root could alone, an arrangement that benefits the plant's nutrition.

In Cycas, a different kind of partnership shows up: some of the roots develop into small, specialised structures called coralloid roots, named for their coral-like, branched appearance. These coralloid roots host nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria within their tissue, and this association supplies the plant with nitrogen in a usable form, again improving the plant's nutrient supply. …
