Ground-state P (Z = 15): [Ne] 3s^2 3p^3. On excitation one 3s electron is promoted to a 3d orbital, giving five unpaired electrons: 3s^1 3p^3 3d^1. These one s, three p and one d orbitals mix to give five equivalent sp3d hybrid orbitals.
