Passing dry HCl gas into ethylene adds H and Cl across the double bond to give ethyl chloride directly.

Ethylene (ethene, CH2=CH2) is an alkene, and alkenes characteristically undergo electrophilic addition reactions across their C=C double bond.

When dry hydrogen chloride gas is passed into ethylene (often in the presence of a catalyst such as anhydrous AlCl3, or simply on mixing the gases), HCl adds across the double bond: the H atom and the Cl atom each add to one of the two doubly-bonded carbons, converting the pi bond into a sigma bond and saturating the molecule.

CH2=CH2 + HCl --> CH3-CH2-Cl (ethyl chloride / chloroethane)
