Ethyl chloride is made by the direct addition of hydrogen chloride gas to ethylene (an electrophilic addition reaction typical of alkenes).

Ethylene (ethene), CH₂=CH₂, contains a reactive C=C double bond made of one σ-bond and one π-bond. The π-electrons are exposed and available for attack by electrophiles, so ethylene readily undergoes addition reactions.

When dry hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) is passed into ethylene (often in the presence of a catalyst such as anhydrous AlCl₃, or simply by direct addition), HCl adds across the double bond:

CH₂=CH₂ + HCl → CH₃–CH₂–Cl (ethyl chloride / chloroethane)
