Ethylene is made by dehydration of ethanol or dehydrohalogenation of ethyl halide; it undergoes ozonolysis to formaldehyde, oxidation with cold alk. KMnO4 to ethylene glycol, and addition with Br2 to 1,2-dibromoethane.

Preparation of ethylene (ethene, CH2=CH2) — any two methods:

  1. Dehydration of ethyl alcohol: ethanol heated with excess concentrated sulphuric acid at about 443 K (170 C) loses a water molecule to give ethylene. CH3CH2OH --(conc. H2SO4, 443 K)--> CH2=CH2 + H2O.
  2. Dehydrohalogenation of ethyl halide: ethyl bromide on heating with alcoholic potassium hydroxide undergoes β-elimination of HBr to give ethylene. CH3CH2Br + KOH (alcoholic) --(heat)--> CH2=CH2 + KBr + H2O. (Another method: heating a sodium salt of succinic acid, or Kolbe's electrolysis; two suffice.)

Reactions of ethylene:

  1. With ozone (ozonolysis): ethylene adds ozone to form ethylene ozonide, which on hydrolysis in the presence of zinc dust gives formaldehyde. CH2=CH2 + O3 → (ethylene ozonide) --(H2O/Zn)--> 2 HCHO (formaldehyde).
  2. With cold dilute alkaline KMnO4 (Baeyer's reagent): ethylene is oxidised (hydroxylation) to ethylene glycol, and the pink/purple colour of KMnO4 is discharged (a test for unsaturation). …
