Plaster of Paris (CaSO4.1/2H2O) is obtained by partially dehydrating gypsum and is mainly used for casts, moulds and construction decoration.

What it is

Plaster of Paris is calcium sulphate hemihydrate, formula CaSO4.1/2H2O (sometimes written (CaSO4)2.H2O). It is prepared by heating gypsum, CaSO4.2H2O, to about 393 K (120 C):

2(CaSO4.2H2O) --heat, 393K--> 2(CaSO4.1/2H2O) + 3H2O

It is a white powder that, when mixed with water, sets into a hard mass by re-forming gypsum (recrystallising with water), which is why it is useful for taking the shape of a mould.

Uses

  1. Making moulds for pottery, ceramics and decorative articles.
  2. Making false ceilings and ornamental designs in buildings. …
