Entropy is a measure of disorder/randomness of a system (a state function); standard enthalpy of formation is the enthalpy change for forming 1 mole of a compound from its elements in their standard states.

  1. Entropy (S): Entropy is a thermodynamic state function that measures the degree of disorder or randomness in a system. The more disordered a system, the higher its entropy. For example, entropy increases in the order solid < liquid < gas, and increases when a solid dissolves or a gas expands. For a reversible process at temperature T, the change in entropy is: delta S = q(rev) / T where q(rev) is the heat absorbed reversibly. Its units are J K^-1 mol^-1. According to the second law of thermodynamics, the entropy of the universe increases in any spontaneous (irreversible) process.
  2. Standard enthalpy of formation (delta H f standard): It is defined as the enthalpy change that occurs when one mole of a compound is formed from its constituent elements, all substances being in their standard states (most stable form at 298 K and 1 bar pressure). Example: C(graphite) + O2(g) -> CO2(g); delta H f standard = -393.5 kJ/mol. …
