The net enthalpy change of a reaction is independent of the path taken.

Enthalpy (H) is a state function, so its change (delta H) depends only on the initial and final states, not on the route.

Hess's law: If a reaction can be carried out in one step or broken into several steps, the algebraic sum of the enthalpy changes of the individual steps equals the enthalpy change of the overall reaction.

If A -> B directly has enthalpy change delta H, and A -> C -> B occurs through steps delta H1 and delta H2, then delta H = delta H1 + delta H2.
