Hess's Law of Constant Heat Summation: the enthalpy change of a reaction is independent of the path/number of steps by which it is carried out, since enthalpy is a state function.

Statement: If a reaction can be made to take place in a number of ways, in one step or in several steps, the total enthalpy change is always the same, i.e. the enthalpy change for a reaction depends only on the initial and final states of the system, and is independent of the path (or the number of intermediate steps) followed.

Basis: Enthalpy (H) is a state function — its change depends only on the initial and final states, not on the route taken between them. So if a reaction A → D can occur directly, or via intermediates A → B → C → D, then:

ΔH(A→D) = ΔH(A→B) + ΔH(B→C) + ΔH(C→D)
