Extensive properties scale with the quantity of matter present (additive); intensive properties are independent of the quantity of matter (same value throughout a homogeneous system).

Thermodynamic properties (state functions/system properties) are classified into two types based on their dependence on the size of the system:

Extensive properties: These depend on the amount of matter (mass or moles) present in the system. If a system is divided into parts, an extensive property of the whole equals the sum of that property for each part (it is additive). Examples: mass, volume, internal energy (U), enthalpy (H), entropy (S), Gibbs energy (G), heat capacity.
