Intensive properties are independent of the amount of substance; extensive properties are additive and scale with the amount of substance.

Thermodynamic properties (state variables) of a system are classified into two types based on how they behave when the size of the system is changed:

Intensive properties: These do NOT depend on the quantity/mass of matter present in the system. If a homogeneous system is divided into two parts, each part shows the same value of an intensive property as the whole. Examples: temperature (T), pressure (P), density (ρ), molar volume, refractive index, viscosity, surface tension, specific heat.
