Real gases approach ideal-gas behaviour when their density is very low — i.e., at low pressure and high temperature — because intermolecular forces and molecular volume then become negligible.

Why real gases deviate from ideal behaviour

The ideal gas equation pV=nRTpV = nRT assumes (i) gas molecules have negligible volume compared to the container, and (ii) there are no intermolecular attractive or repulsive forces between molecules. Real gas molecules do have a finite size and do exert weak forces on each other (Van der Waals forces), so real gases deviate from the ideal gas law, especially at high pressure and low temperature.

Conditions for ideal behaviour

  • Low pressure: the gas occupies a large volume, so molecules are far apart on average. The actual volume of the molecules becomes negligible compared to the volume of the container, and they interact with each other only rarely. …
