Boyle's law relates pressure and volume at constant temperature (PV = constant); Charles's law relates volume and temperature at constant pressure (V ∝ T).

Boyle's law. For a given (fixed) mass of gas held at a constant temperature, the pressure P of the gas is inversely proportional to its volume V:

P ∝ 1/V, i.e., PV = constant

Equivalently, for the same gas sample at the same temperature but two different states 1 and 2: P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. This means that if you compress a gas at constant temperature, its pressure increases in exact proportion to the decrease in volume.

Charles's law. For a given (fixed) mass of gas held at a constant pressure, the volume V of the gas is directly proportional to its absolute (Kelvin) temperature T:

V ∝ T, i.e., V/T = constant
