Friction is essential for many everyday actions but also causes energy loss and wear in machines.

Advantages of friction:

  1. Walking is possible only because of friction between our feet and the ground; on a frictionless (slippery) surface we cannot walk.
  2. Vehicles can move, stop, and turn because of friction between tyres and the road; brakes work due to friction.
  3. Nails, screws, nuts and bolts stay fixed in place due to friction.
  4. We can hold and grip objects (like a pen while writing, or a rope while climbing) because of friction between our fingers/palms and the object.
  5. A ladder placed against a wall stays in place due to friction at its base and against the wall.

Disadvantages of friction:

  1. Friction causes wear and tear of machine parts (like tyres, shoe soles, engine parts, gears) that are in relative motion.
  2. It generates unwanted heat, wasting energy that could otherwise do useful work. …
