These are the three regimes of friction between two surfaces in contact: limiting (about to slip), dynamic/kinetic (already sliding), and rolling (rolling without sliding) — with rolling friction being the smallest of the three.

Limiting friction: When a body is at rest and an increasing external force is applied, the static friction opposing it also increases up to a maximum value, called limiting friction — the maximum value of static friction that acts just before the body starts to slide. Beyond this, the body begins to move.

Dynamic (kinetic) friction: Once the body starts sliding over the surface, the friction that acts between the two surfaces in relative motion is called dynamic or kinetic friction. It is generally slightly less than limiting friction and remains roughly constant (independent of speed, for moderate speeds), given by f_k = μ_k N.
