Friction is reduced mainly by making surfaces smoother, separating them with a lubricating film, or replacing sliding contact with rolling contact.

Common methods used to decrease friction:

  1. Polishing: Smoothing the surfaces in contact reduces the interlocking of surface irregularities, lowering friction.
  2. Lubrication: Applying oil, grease, or graphite between the surfaces creates a thin film that keeps the solid surfaces from direct contact, greatly reducing friction (this converts solid friction largely into much smaller fluid friction).
  3. Using ball bearings / roller bearings: Replacing sliding friction with rolling friction (which is much smaller) — e.g. in wheels, machine shafts.
  4. Streamlining: For bodies moving through a fluid (air/water), giving them a streamlined shape reduces fluid (drag) friction. …
